Information Literacy Workshop 2004 Follow-Up:
Resources Created for UWF

Introduction

Participants of the May 2004 workshop were expected to attend the complete workshop and to revise the syllabus and assignments for at least one class that would be taught during 2004-2005, in conjunction with the appropriate subject-specialist librarian, to incorporate information literacy principles throughout the length of the course. While participants were only required to address one course during the workshop, many may also have been able to apply what they learned to other courses. Close collaboration with a library faculty member was expected during all phases of the project. Finally, it was hoped that the participants would informally encourage others in their departments and across campus to embrace and implement information literacy principles in the future.

The following materials, among others, were presented during the workshop:

Non-Course-Specific Products

While the resources outlined above were created during the workshop with a specific course in mind, many of them will also be applicable within other courses offered through the same academic department. However, UWF's librarians have also begun to develop a bank of generic, online instructional modules which can be used independently or in a series, and may be used by individual students wishing to enhance their skills, or by professors in conjunction with a course or other assignment. Instructors are encouraged to include links to these resources from their course Web pages, PowerPoint presentations, or D2L, and to assign them for credit to their students. Once developed, these modules will be made available through the library's Web pages (currently-available resources).

Each online module will provide an interactive lesson and assignment on a pertinent information- or research-related topic, and will include exercises and a mechanism for auto-grading and printing or emailing a summary of how well the user performed. Additionally, the modules will contain the following elements: A definition of the topic, student learning outcomes for the module, an explanation of the lesson, examples of the ideas covered, information on how or where to locate additional information or resources, and links to related resources.

It is expected that multiple resources will be completed during 2004-2005. Following is a list of the modules under development in Phase 1 of the project.

Future Workshops

Because of the overwhelming success of the first workshop, and in an effort to further develop information literacy skills in UWF students, the library plans to offer a second workshop in the same format in May 2005. For details about the upcoming workshop, visit this informational page and apply using this form.
