The Archaeology Institute at the University of West Florida is the research and curation facility for northwest Florida and is dedicated to the investigation and enhancement of the area’s historic and pre-historic archaeology on land and under water.  Its staff is particularly knowledgeable about Pre-Columbian, Colonial, Mill, and shipwreck resources.  AI staff members regularly identify and relate the significance of items brought in by the public and provide archaeological services to municipalities and developers as well.  They also offer exhibit design services.

The Archaeology Institute maintains an extensive non-circulating library of books relating to various facets of archaeology as well as contract reports from work throughout the South, and sustains an exhibit area illustrating the results of archaeological investigations in and around Pensacola. Topics include American Indian artifacts from northwest Florida, the Emanuel Point Ship from de Luna’s colonization attempt, the Presidio Santa Maria de Galve, a shipwreck contemporary with Santa Maria called the Santa Rosa Island Wreck, archaeology of the British Fort in downtown Pensacola, water powered mills in the region from British through the American eras including Arcadia Mill, and the ship Catherine which hauled timber from Pensacola’s mills in the 1890s.  Both the library and exhibit area are available to the public.
