Planning the Search for Financial Aid
Many web sites require registration and personal
information. Be wary of what you provide. Sometimes the information that is
provided is not precisely on target. In general: check out the
credentials of the web site publisher before paying a fee.

The following sites allow the user to search by certain characteristics:
Identifying Types of Aid
There are a variety of forms of financial aid.
- Grants and awards - sources of free aid which individuals do not repay
are available from federal, state, and private sources
- Loans - available to almost all applicants, from a variety
of sources and must be repaid
- Scholarships - available to both needy and non-needy students from a
wide variety of sources and are based on a variety of criteria
- Internships - offer opportunities to work and learn in specific fields.
They may be paid or unpaid, credit or non-credit, connected to a school program
or in the private sector
- Work Study - usually work for needy students in on-campus
positions but non-needy students may be eligible and the work may be connected
with the private sector
