Definition & Historical Analysis
Books providing background and historical information about law and social
policy are indexed in Aleph, UWF's online catalog. Subject, keyword, author, and title
searches for books may be conducted in Aleph using either the Basic or Advanced
search screens. Broad topics may be limited by adding subdivisions such as
law and legislation or policy. For example, users may enter
searches such as homelessness--government policy or adoption--law and
legislation.

- Contains lengthy definitions of individuals who have contributed to
community organizations and associations that have affected the community
organization movement. Lists of organizations, key legislation, and important
individuals relating to community organization are included in the appendices.

- This encyclopedic treatment of American state and federal case law is
well-indexed and is updated with regular supplements. For an encyclopedic

- This comprehensive encyclopedia provides lengthy essays on the emotional,
physical, intellectual, and vocational aspects of adolescence. A list of
references accompanies each essay and a subject index concludes Volume
2.
- Encyclopedia of Social Work. 3 volumes. 1965- (Ref. HV 35 S6 19th ed.
1995)
- Articles on topics, recent trends, activities, and leaders in social work
are arranged alphabetically in this irregularly published work. Each article
is signed and followed by a bibliography of recent studies. A section
containing tables of demographic and social statistics, some dating back to
1890, is included. A list of topics is outlined in the front of each
volume.
- International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences
(IESBS). 2001. (Ref. H 41 I58 2001)
- This highly inter-disciplinary, 26-volume encyclopedia set provides
thousands of detailed articles written by 4,000 authors from over 50
countries, including 150 biographical entries of deceased scientists and
scholars. The fully cross-referenced work also provides approximately 90,000
bibliographic references and concludes with comprehensive name and subject
indexes. This new reference tool helps to supplement and update the
information contained in MacMillan's classic, 18-volume International
Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (Ref. H 40 A2 I5) published in 1968.
For historical information, researchers may also wish to consult the
Encyclopaedia of the Social Sciences (Ref. H 41 E6), a 15-volume set
published in 1930.
- Legal Almanac Series. 1946- (Ref. KF 209 .L4, followed by the issue
number)
- This series consists of numerous small, regularly updated handbooks
published by Oceana Publications which cover individual topics as they relate
to current, United States law. Examples of topics include wills, divorce,
adoption, homosexuality, AIDS, civil liberties, child abuse, and drug abuse.
Researchers may enter the phrase legal almanac series in the online
catalog to view all of the titles in the series, or may search individually by
the title or author of particular volumes.
- Modern Dictionary for the Legal Profession. 1993. (Ref. KF 156 .R42)
- This works contains definitions of over 8,000 modern terms from a variety
of professions related to law. The majority of concepts are from the areas of
business and political science, although coverage of psychology, literature,
and medicine is also provided.
- Social Science Encyclopedia. 1996. (Ref. H 41 S63)
- This single-volume encyclopedia provides page-length descriptions of
concepts relating to the social sciences. Over 700 entries concerning
theories, methodologies, issues, and biographies are included in this work.
Bibliographies accompany each essay.

- Academic Index ASAP is a multi-disciplinary index to journal and
newspaper articles in the social sciences, sciences, and humanities. Coverage
of general periodicals, scholarly journals, and newspapers is
provided.
- Academic
Universe. (Lexis-Nexis)
- A comprehensive database that contains full text coverage of laws, cases,
and regulations. It also provides access to legal periodicals and newspapers.
The emphasis of this database is on business law.
- Congressional Universe. (Lexis-Nexis)
- This full-text database provides information about proposed legislation,
legislative activities, members of Congress, and Congressional publications.
Links to related Internet sites are also included.
- Inter-University Consortium for Political & Social Research.
(ICPSR)
- The ICPSR, established at the University of Michigan, maintains and
provides access to a vast archive of over 45,000 social science-related
surveys, studies, and datasets for research and instruction. The Website
allows searching of the abstracts in the database, but downloading is required
to view the extensive files of raw data. Topics covered in the ICPSR
include history, political science, criminal justice, education, social work,
public health and medical care, law, sociology, demography, foreign policy,
and economics. The UWF Statistics Center (850-474-2790), located in Building
39, Room 129 of UWF's main campus, may be able to assist users in interpreting
and analyzing data downloaded from the ICPSR. While the resource is accessible
to undergraduates, because of its complex nature and contents, the database is
most appropriate for use by faculty and graduate students.
- Social Sciences Full-Text. Indexing from 1983-; Abstracting from
1994- (WilsonWeb)
- This database indexes nearly 400 scholarly journals in the social
sciences.
- Social
Sciences Citation Index. 1981- (Datastar)
- This index, available only on the UWF campus with a username and password,
provides author, subject, and cited author access to articles in social
science journals. The unique citation feature of this index allows the
researcher to determine how often and by whom an author's work has been
cited.
- Social Services Abstracts. 1980- (Cambridge)

- This database provides bibliographic coverage of current research focused
on social work, human services, and related areas, including social welfare,
social policy, and community development.
- Social Work
Abstracts. 1977- (SilverPlatter)
- This source, also available in print (Ref. HV 1 .A29), contains citations
to and abstracts of articles from scholarly journals in social work. Coverage
of family issues, social work policy, delinquency, addiction, and other areas
of concern to social work students is excellent.
- Sociological Abstracts. 1963- (Cambridge)
- This resource, also available in print (Ref. HM 1 S67), provides citations
to articles in over 20,000 journals and to dissertations relating to
sociology.
- Westlaw
- A comprehensive legal database that provides full text coverage of legal
publications including laws, cases, regulations, law reviews, and reference
materials.
- WilsonOmniFile. 1980+ (WilsonWeb)
- Coverage of over 800 journals from a variety of subject areas is provided
in this full-text database.
Federal Statutes
- United States Statutes at Large. 1789/1873- (Ref. KF 50)
- Once a law has been passed by Congress and signed by the President (or
passed over the president's veto), it is disseminated to the public in its
original, printed form as a pamphlet called a Slip Law. These Slip
Laws are then cumulated chronologically and published in volumes entitled
United States Statutes at Large. Each volume of this official statutory

- The U.S. Code provides access to current laws by arranging them
into 50 broad subject areas called titles. This work is published every
six years and is updated annually with supplements. Cited: 1 U.S.C. 908. The
United States Code Annotated (Ref. KF 62 1927 W45) presents all the
current laws in subject order, but also provides annotations of the court
