- As part of its Open Collections Program, the Harvard University Library
has developed a site containing the full text of over 200 digitized books, manuscripts, and images relating to women and work selected from
Harvard's library and museum collections. As stated on its Web site, the "collection explores women's roles in the U.S. economy between the
Civil War and the Great Depression. Working conditions, conditions in the home, costs of living, recreation, health and hygiene, conduct of
life, policies and regulations governing the workplace, and social issues are all well documented." While the site currently offers a wealth
of information, upon its completion the collection will contain more than 2,200 books and pamphlets, 1,000 photographs, and 10,000 pages from
manuscript collections. The project's goal in digitizing the materials is to "increase the availability and use of these historical
resources for teaching, learning, and research" (C&RL News, May 2004).
