The table of contents of this work outlines the research process and follows the steps used in planning and conducting research. Appendixes include a glossary of terms, abbreviations, and symbols; the Greek alphabet; statistical tables; and a checklist for the research proposal.


Sage Encyclopedia of Social Science Research Methods. 2004. 3 volumes. (Ref. H 62 S34 2004)
The "cardinal aim of this encyclopedia is to provide readers... an introduction to research methods by giving an account of their purposes, principles, developments, and applications." The alphabetically arranged entries include examples, discussions, and references. A large bibliography and index are in volume 3.

Academic Index ASAP. (InfoTrac)
Academic Index is a comprehensive database of popular and scholarly journal and newspaper articles in the social sciences, sciences, and humanities.


Combined Retrospective Indexes to Journals in Sociology. 6 volumes. 1895-1974. (Ref. HM 1 C73)
This work includes 400,000 articles from back files of 531 journals in sociology. It is arranged into 86 broad categories, each with its own chronological and keyword index. For more current information, consult the Cumulative Index of Sociology Journals (Ref. HM 1 L34).


Contemporary Women's Issues. 1992- (RDS)
This database indexes books, journals, newsletters, research reports from non-profit groups, government and international agencies, and fact sheets concerning contemporary women's issues on health and human rights in over 150 countries.


Ethnic Newswatch. (ProQuest)
This database provides full-text information from newspapers, magazines, and journals of the ethnic, minority, and native press. Articles are available in both English and Spanish. The titles in Ethnic NewsWatch represent the diversity of the American population in ways that are generally not seen in the mainstream media and, therefore, in other online databases.


GenderWatch. (ProQuest)
GenderWatch is a full-text database focusing on the impact of gender across a broad spectrum of subjects. The database primarily contains current publications, but also indexes archival material dating back to the 1970s for selected titles.


Index to Current Urban Documents. 1972-1993. (Ref. Z 7165 .U5 I654)
This standard index for the study of population is arranged by broad subjects including mortality, marriage, divorce, family, demographics, and economic interrelations. See also Sage Urban Studies Abstracts (Ref. HT 51 S24).


Inter-University Consortium for Political & Social Research. (ICPSR)
The ICPSR, established at the University of Michigan, maintains and provides access to a vast archive of over 45,000 social science-related surveys, studies, and datasets for research and instruction. The Website allows searching of the abstracts in the database, but downloading is required to view the extensive files of raw data. Topics covered in the ICPSR include history, political science, criminal justice, education, social work, public health and medical care, law, sociology, demography, foreign policy, and economics. UWF Statistical Consulting Services (850-474-2790), located in Building 39, Room 129 of UWF's main campus, may be able to assist users in interpreting and analyzing data downloaded from the ICPSR. While the resource is accessible to undergraduates, because of its complex nature and contents, the database is most appropriate for use by faculty and graduate students.


Inventory of Marriage and Family Literature. 1973/74 - 1993/94. (Ref. HQ 728 I57)
This index to journal articles relating to all aspects of marriage and family life updates the International Bibliography of Research in Marriage and the Family Volume 1: 1900-1964; Volume 2: 1965-1972 (Ref. Z 7164 M2 A48).


PAIS International. 1972-
This index to books, journals, and government documents includes coverage of sociology, public administration, politics, economics, and international law. The printed version of PAIS (Ref. H 1 P943) is available from 1915-1996.

This database provides citations to and abstracts of books, journal articles, papers, and other research materials related to population. The site offers browsing and searching capabilities by subject, author, keyword, and geographic region.


Social Science Citation Index. 1981- (Datastar)
The Social Science Citation Index is available via DataStarWeb, but requires a password which can be obtained at the library Reference Desk. This index provides access to journal articles in sociology, social work, psychology, political science, and other related disciplines. The index may be searched by subject, author, or cited author.


Social Sciences Full-Text. 1983- (WilsonWeb)
This multi-disciplinary database provides access to journal articles in sociology and the other social sciences.


Sociological Abstracts. 1963- (Cambridge)
This database provides abstracts of articles from over 1,000 international sociology and social science journals. A cumulative index appears annually. To most effectively use the index, consult the Thesaurus of Sociological Index Terms (Ref. HM 1 S672) to determine the appropriate terminology. The printed version of this source, Sociological Abstracts (Ref. HM 1 S67), is available from 1953 to 1996.


Women's Studies Abstracts. 1972- (Ref. HQ 1101 W6)
This index contains abstracts of articles published in journals relating to women's studies. Coverage includes topics such as psychology, family planning, literature, interpersonal relations, society, and politics.

This work lists articles, books, and book reviews in a classified arrangement. Subject and author indexes are provided in both French and English.

This research program, developed and maintained by UNESCO, provides full-text access to research in the social sciences. The clearinghouse publications primarily relate to social, economic, environmental, and technological transformations, as well as to general multicultural issues.

This work provides extensive coverage of the development of American society, including essays on the history of American culture, as well as theoretical issues such as social identity (e.g., race, social class, gender, religion), forces shaping society (e.g., urbanization, industrialization, market revolution), patterns of everyday life (e.g., work, food, housing), and phases of the life cycle. This comprehensive source contains essays on all aspects of marriage and family, including adoption, alimony, courtship, marriage counseling, family violence, weddings, and teenage pregnancy. Statistical data often accompanies the descriptive text.

Encyclopedic Dictionary of Sociology. 1991. (Ref HM 17 E529)
This work provides concise definitions of over 1,300 theories, processes, and trends in sociology. Cross references, illustrations, topic guides, and subject directories facilitate the use of this dictionary.


International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences (IESBS). 2001. (Ref. H 41 I58 2001 & available online)
This highly inter-disciplinary, 26-volume encyclopedia set provides thousands of detailed articles written by 4,000 authors from over 50 countries, including 150 biographical entries of deceased scientists and scholars. The fully cross-referenced work also provides approximately 90,000 bibliographic references and concludes with comprehensive name and subject indexes. This new reference tool helps to supplement and update the information contained in MacMillan's classic, 18-volume International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (Ref. H 40 A2 I5) published in 1968.

Handbook of Clinical Sociology. 1991. (Ref. HM 73 H3515)
This work contains an annotated bibliography of sources relating to clinical sociology, a list of sociological associations, and a chronological history of the discipline of clinical sociology.


Handbook of American Popular Culture. 1978- (Ref. E 169 .1 H2643)
Offers essays on various aspects of popular culture including advertising, the circus, toys, sports, films, etc. The essays were prepared by authorities in the field. Bibliographies follow each entry.


Police Misconduct in America: A Reference Handbook. 2001. (Ref. HV 8141 C44)
This work examines several forms of police misconduct that have been identified since the early 1900s, including police corruption, police deviance, and excessive force.


Survey of Social Science: Sociology Series. 5 volumes. 1994. (Ref. HM 17 .S86)
Over 300 areas of sociology are introduced and described in this handbook, including issues such as aging, culture, demography, social interaction, and rural life. The lengthy entries include a glossary of related terms, an overview of the issue, and a bibliography.

Issued as an annual, this major guide to U.S. publications includes abstracts as well as ordering information for all census publications. The work is kept current by Monthly Product Announcement (U.S. Doc. C3.163/7) and can also be used in conjunction with the Bureau of the Census Catalog of Publications, 1790-1972 (U.S. Doc. C56.222/2-2:790-972).


County and City Data Book. 1949- (U.S. Doc. & Ref Desk. C3.134/2:C83/2/)
This work contains statistics on population, housing, income, education, and employment for counties, metropolitan areas, cities, urbanized areas, and unincorporated places in the U. S.
