This work is a comprehensive annotated bibliography of books and journals relating to the care of the elderly. Author and subject indexes are provided.


Handbook of Research Methods: A Guide for Practitioners and Students in the Social Sciences. 2nd edition. 2002. (Ref. Q 180 .55 M4 S67 2002)
The table of contents of this work outlines the research process and follows the steps used in planning and conducting research. Appendixes include a glossary of terms, abbreviations, and symbols; the Greek alphabet; statistical tables; and a checklist for the research proposal.


Research Methods in Social Work. 2004. (HV 11 R69)
This is an introductory text that has been written for both undergraduate and graduate social work students. It is a book that has been described as "very strong concerning the basic research principles and concepts" and as providing "strong practical applications for both conducting and evaluating social work."


Research Methods for Social Workers. 1999. (Ref. HV 11 Y43)
This book offers a conceptual understanding of statistical analysis and prepares the reader to evaluate research, as well as to design and implement it. Sage Encyclopedia of Social Science Research Methods. 2004. 3 volumes. (Ref. H 62 S34 2004)
The "cardinal aim of this encyclopedia is to provide readers... an introduction to research methods by giving an account of their purposes, principles, developments, and applications." The alphabetically arranged entries include examples, discussions, and references. A large bibliography and index are in volume 3.


Social Science Reference Sources: A Practical Guide. 1990. (Ref. H 61 L515)
This comprehensive, annotated bibliography of general reference sources in the social sciences covers research materials in specific disciplines, including law, psychology, anthropology, business, education, geography, history, political science, and sociology. See also the Guide to Information Sources for Social Work and the Human Services (Ref. HV 91 M43 1987).


Social Worker's Guide to the Internet. 2001. (Ref. HV 29 .2 M37)
This textbook provides non-technical instructions on how to access resources from the Internet and lists some useful websites. The Social Worker's Internet Handbook (Ref. HV 40 G73 1998) also gives general instructions and details how Internet resources can be usefully incorporated into a social worker's daily work activities.

Indexes & Abstracts

AgeLine. (AARP)
Produced by AARP's Research Information Center, this searchable, electronic database contains over 60,000 detailed summaries of resources about older adults and aging, including books, journals and magazines, research reports, and videos. AgeLine is updated regularly and includes material from 1978 to the present, as well as selected coverage of the years 1966-1977. The database covers English-language literature published in numerous countries. The AgeLine database serves the general public, policymakers, researchers, and medical professionals and caregivers.


CQ Researcher. 1991- (CQ Press)
This online resource provides lengthy articles on various current topics which provide background information, charts and tables, related statistics, maps, related biographies, bibliographies for further reading, and more. The articles are an immensely valuable starting point for research on social science issues and current events. The database is searchable and browsable by topic or by date produced. The library also has print volumes of the resource from 1991 to 2001. Print volumes are held in Periodicals at H 35 .E352.


Dissertations and Theses Abstracts. 1861- (ProQuest)
This monthly publication includes lengthy abstracts of doctoral dissertations prepared at U.S. and foreign institutions. Digital Dissertations (ProQuest) contains a searchable database from 2005 and 2006.


ERIC. 1966- (Cambridge)
ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) is a comprehensive education index that is available as a database which collectively indexes both journal articles (EJ) and unpublished documents (ED). Topics relevant to social work, such as child abuse, adult education, and counseling are included. Print versions of this source, in two separate indexes entitled Current Index to Journals in Education (Ref. L 11 C8, 1966-92 & FWB, 1983-) and Resources in Education (Ref. LB 1028 R34, 1966- & FWB, 1984-), are also available. Recent ED documents are also available in full-text from ERIC E*Subscribe.


Inter-University Consortium for Political & Social Research. (ICPSR)
The ICPSR, established at the University of Michigan, maintains and provides access to a vast archive of over 45,000 social science-related surveys, studies, and datasets for research and instruction. The Website allows searching of the abstracts in the database, but downloading is required to view the extensive files of raw data. Topics covered in the ICPSR include history, political science, criminal justice, education, social work, public health and medical care, law, sociology, demography, foreign policy, and economics. The UWF Statistics Center (850-474-2790), located in Building 39, Room 129 of UWF's main campus, may be able to assist users in interpreting and analyzing data downloaded from the ICPSR. While the resource is accessible to undergraduates, because of its complex nature and contents, the database is most appropriate for use by faculty and graduate students.


PsycINFO. 1887- (ProQuest)
PsycINFO provides access to citations and abstracts of psychological journal articles, books, and book chapters. This comprehensive source covers issues relating to social work such as counseling, substance abuse, addiction, and family violence. PsycINFO is the electronic version of Psychological Abstracts (Ref. BF 1 P65) & FWB.


Social Sciences Full-Text. 1983- (WilsonWeb)
This multi-disciplinary database provides access to journal articles in social work and the other social sciences.


Social Sciences Citation Index. 1981- (Datastar)
This index provides access to journal articles in social work, sociology, psychology, and related disciplines. The index may be searched by subject, author, or cited author. You must consult a reference librarian in order to access this password-protected database.


Social Services Abstracts. 1980- (Cambridge)
This database provides bibliographic coverage of current research focused on social work, human services, and related areas.


Social Work Abstracts. 1977- (SilverPlatter) and (Ref. HV 1 A29)
This source contains citations and abstracts of articles from scholarly journals in social work. Coverage of family issues, social work policy, delinquency, addiction, and other areas of concern to social work students is excellent.


Sociological Abstracts. 1963- (Cambridge) and (Ref. HM 1 S67)
This work provides citations to articles in over 20,000 journals and to sociology-related dissertations.


Wilson OmniFile Full-Text. 1994- (WilsonWeb)
This completely full-text database provides coverage of over 800 journals from a variety of subject areas.

Encyclopedia of Social Work. 3 volumes. 1965- (Ref. HV 35 S6 19th ed. 1995 & FWB).
This irregularly-published work contains alphabetically-arranged articles on topics, recent trends, activities, and leaders in social work. Each article is signed and followed by a bibliography of recent studies. A section containing tables of demographic and social statistics, some dating back as far as 1890, is included.


International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences (IESBS). 2001. (Ref. H 41 I58 2001 & available online)
This highly inter-disciplinary, 26-volume encyclopedia set provides thousands of detailed articles written by 4,000 authors from over 50 countries, including 150 biographical entries of deceased scientists and scholars. The fully cross-referenced work also provides approximately 90,000 bibliographic references and concludes with comprehensive name and subject indexes. This new reference tool helps to supplement and update the information contained in MacMillan's classic, 18-volume International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (Ref. H 40 A2 I5) published in 1968.

This single-volume encyclopedia provides page-length descriptions of concepts relating to the social sciences. Over 700 entries concerning theories, methodologies, issues, and biographical information are included. Bibliographies accompany each essay.

This comprehensive listing of federal programs and activities providing assistance or benefits to the American public contains information about the agency funding the assistance, the objectives, award type, eligibility requirements, regulations and restrictions, application information, examples of funded projects, and criteria for selecting proposals. Detailed indexes by agency, program, deadline date, function, and subject are provided.


Directory of Community Services: A Directory of Health & Human Services in Escambia County, Florida (First Call for Help). 1998. (Ref. Desk HV 99 E7 I48)
This source provides addresses, phone numbers, and a description of the purpose of community agencies in Escambia County. The directory is arranged alphabetically by agency name and contains a listing of entries by topic for keyword access.

Published by the Council on Social Work Education, this geographically-arranged directory lists American institutions of higher education offering baccalaureate and master's programs in social work, including those programs currently in pre-accreditation status. This useful volume presents chapters on beginning the job search, researching market and salary information, preparing resumes, identifying jobs, interviewing effectively, evaluating job offers, and continuing one's professional development.
