This comprehensive database indexes popular and scholarly journal and newspaper articles in the social sciences, sciences, and humanities.


AgeLine. 1978-  http://research.aarp.org/ageline/home.html (AARP)
This searchable database contains over 60,000 detailed summaries of resources about older adults and aging.


CQ Researcher. 1991-  (CQ Press)
Lengthy articles in this source provide background information, charts and tables, statistics, maps, biographies and bibliographies. This is a good starting point for research on social science issues.


Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.  (Cambridge)
This service provides access to 70 scientific databases and is searchable by category or by database. Some citations link to full-text articles.


CINAHL. 1982-  (EBSCOhost)
This resource indexes and provides abstracts and selected full-text articles for over 1,600 allied health and nursing journals.


Inter-University Consortium for Political & Social Research (ICPSR)
The ICPSR, established at the University of Michigan, maintains and provides access to a vast archive of over 45,000 social science-related surveys, studies, and datasets for research and instruction. The Website allows searching of the abstracts in the database, but downloading is required to view the extensive files of raw data. Topics covered in the ICPSR include history, political science, criminal justice, education, social work, public health and medical care, law, sociology, demography, foreign policy, and economics. UWF Statistical Consulting Services(850-474-2790), located in Building 39, Room 129 of UWF's main campus, may be able to assist users in interpreting and analyzing data downloaded from the ICPSR. While the resource is accessible to undergraduates, because of its complex nature and contents, the database is most appropriate for use by faculty and graduate students.

This database provides citations to and abstracts of books, journal articles, papers, and other research materials related to population. The site offers browsing and searching capabilities by subject, author, keyword, and geographic region.


PsycINFO. 1887-  ProQuest
PsycINFO provides access to citations and abstracts of psychological journal articles, books, and book chapters in all areas of psychology, behavioral science and related topics. PsycINFO is the electronic version of Psychological Abstracts (Ref. BF 1 P65 & FWB).


SciSearch. 1971-  Dialog;  1980-  DataStar
This database corresponds to the printed indexes Science Citation Index and Current Contents. See a Librarian to access this multidisciplinary index to the international literature of science and technology.


Social Work Abstracts. 1977-   (Ref. HV 1 A29) (SilverPlatter)
This source contains citations and abstracts of articles from scholarly journals in social work. Coverage of family issues, social work policy, delinquency, addiction, and other areas of concern to social work students is excellent.


Sociological Abstracts. 1963-  (Cambridge)
This database provides abstracts of articles from over 1,000 international journals in the social and behavioral sciences. Consult the Thesaurus of Sociological Index Terms (Ref. HM 1 S672) to determine the appropriate terminology. See also the print version of Sociological Abstracts (Ref. HM 1 S67), 1953-1996.


Wilson OmniFile Full-Text. 1994-  (WilsonWeb)
This full-text database provides coverage of over 800 journals from a variety of subject areas.

This work defines hundreds of terms and concepts related to human mortality.


Encyclopedia of Elder Care. 2001. (Ref. RC 954 E53)
This is a comprehensive resource on geriatric and social care.


Encyclopedia of Gerontology: Age, Aging, and the Aged. 2 volumes. 1996. (Ref. RC 952.5 E58)
This is an encyclopedia of extensive articles, with bibliographies, on all aspects of the medical and psychological problems of aging.


Encyclopedia of Human Biology. 8 Volumes. 1991. (Ref. QP 11 E53)
This resoruce contains extensive overview articles on all aspects of human biology with illustrations and bibliographical references.


Encyclopedia of Social Work. 3 volumes. 1965- (Ref. HV 35 S6 19th ed. & FWB)
This irregularly-published work contains alphabetically-arranged, signed articles with bibliographies on topics, recent trends, activities, and leaders in social work. A section contains tables of demographic and social statistics, some dating back as far as 1890, is included.

This work discusses sex similarities and differences, and the impact of society on gender, health, disabilities, ethics, health care, and research.


Graying of America. 1996. (Ref. HQ 1064 U5 K39)
This is an encyclopedia of aging, health, mind and behavior.


International Encyclopedia of the Social and Behavioral Sciences (IESBS). 2001. (Ref. H 41 I58)  Elsevier
This highly inter-disciplinary, 26-volume encyclopedia set provides thousands of detailed articles written by 4,000 authors from over 50 countries, including 150 biographical entries of deceased scientists and scholars. The fully cross-referenced work contains approximately 90,000 bibliographic references and concludes with comprehensive name and subject indexes.
