Meteorology

Introduction

This guide is designed as an aid to finding information on meteorological or climatological topics. For sources that may be found through the online catalog, use relevant subject headings that are suggested in the Library of Congress Subject Headings (Ref. Tables Z 695 L695) list. See also the Information Resource entitled Environmental Science.

Books

Library materials may be identified in the Libraries' Online Catalog by using author, title, keyword, and subject searches. Books on meteorology and climatology are primarily located in the QC 851 to QC 999 call number area on the third floor.

Online books are accessible via NetLibrary. Search this database by keyword (e.g., weather), author, or title.

Databases

Databases index journal articles, books, conference proceedings, reports, and other materials. Databases may be searched individually or in categorized groups via Metalib. If you are searching for a journal title, look it up in the Online Catalog or the CitationLinker, SFX. If we do not own, or have access to, a journal you need, you may request it from Interlibrary Loan. If you are unsure about the quality of the journals you are using, consult the online tutorial, Scholarly Journals vs. Popular Magazines.

The most frequently used meteorology databases are:

Applied Science & Technology Abstracts. 1983- (FirstSearch)
A monthly index to scientific and technical periodicals which contains citations relevant to climatology & meteorology. Includes book reviews. Also available in print format 1914-1957 as Industrial Arts Index, and 1958-1982 as Applied Science and Technology Index (Ref. T 1 A53).

Cambridge Journals Online.
Over 100 journals are indexed in this database, which provides full text coverage and searching options.

Environmental Sciences. 1993+ (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts)
Environmental science databases are grouped together in Cambridge Scientific Abstracts. Cambridge Scientific Abstracts allows you to search by database categories (e.g., environmental science) or within selected databases. Specific databases related to environmental science include, Agricola, Agricultural and Environmental Biotechnology Abstracts, ASFA 3: Aquatic Pollution and Environmental Quality, Bacteriology Abstracts, Ecology Abstracts, EIS: Digests of Environmental Impact Statements, Environmental Engineering Abstracts, Health and Safety Science Abstracts, Human Population & Natural Resource Management, Industrial and Applied Microbiology Abstracts, Pollution Abstracts, Risk Abstracts, Toxicology Abstracts, Water Resources Abstracts.

Environment Abstracts Annual. Annual. 3 vols./yr. 1980-. (Ref. GF 1 E553)
Enviroline 1975- (DIALOG)
An index to literature related to environmental issues with numerous references to climate-related topics. Three volumes are published each year: vol. 1: Abstracts, vol. 2: Subject Index, and vol. 3: Supplementary Indexes (Author, List of Sources Indexed, Source Index and Title Index)..

Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management. 1981 - date (Cambridge)
A multidisciplinary database containing references from numerous journals in meteorology and climatology.

ScienceDirect (Elsevier).
A comprehensive electronic collection of scholarly science, technology and medicine full text and bibliographic information.

Wiley Interscience.
Wiley Interscience includes full text coverage of journals, reference works, and online books in all areas of science.

Wilson Science Complete.

Wilson Science Complete is the online version of the General Science Index, Biological and Agricultural Index, and the Applied Science and Technology Index.

There are other databases available via a dial up service, which requires a librarian's assistance. Please consult a librarian for access to Enviroline, Environmental Bibliography, and SciSearch.
