Databases

AIDS and Cancer Research Abstracts. 1982 - date. (Cambridge)
Worldwide sources of cancer and AIDS research are summarized in this database. This is just one of many databases available through the Cambridge Scientific Abstracts service described below.


Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.
This database service provides access to over 70 Cambridge Scientific databases arranged under 10 broad categories. Searches may be conducted by database categories, or within selected databases. The database categories include: Agricultural Sciences, Aquatic Sciences, Biological and Medical Sciences, Computer Technology, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Engineering Specialties, Materials Science, Market Research, and the Social Sciences. Medline, the major index to medical journals, is included in the Cambridge databases (see also below under the various Medline options). Some citations link to full-text journal articles provided by Science Direct or Springer, both of which may be searched at http://library.uwf.edu/ejournals.

Cochrane Reviews
"Cochrane reviews are based on the best available information about healthcare interventions. They explore the evidence for and against the effectiveness and appropriateness of treatments (medications, surgery, education, etc) in specific circumstances." Abstracts of  evidence-based medical reviews are provided free, and full-text reviews are available by paid subscription.


Health and Wellness Resource Center (Galenet)
This health-related resource center includes information from the following sub-files "Medical Encyclopedia," "Drug and Herb Finder," "Health Assessment Tools," "Health Organization Directory," "Medical Dictionary," "Links to Other Sites," and "Health News."


LexisNexis
This database includes a heading entitled "MEDICAL," that includes three separate sub-files: "Medical Journals," "Medical News," and a condensed version of the MEDLINE database (described below) entitled "Medical Abstracts".  The "Medical News" and "Medical Journals" sub-files include full text articles.


Medical & Pharmaceutical Biotechnology Abstracts. 1993- (Cambridge)
Indexes studies in which biotechnology, molecular biology, or genetics are applied to human health and the treatment of disease.


MDX Health Digest. 1988- (FirstSearch)
An index to over 200 medical and health journals which includes abstracts. Some references originate from MEDLINE.

MEDLINEplus Health Information. 1966- (NLM)
PubMed. 1966- (NLM)
A comprehensive index to over 4,300 biomedical journals from around the world, including citations from International Nursing Index and Index to Dental Literature. Available in hard copy 1960-1996 in the library as Cumulated Index Medicus(Periodicals R 5 C8). Includes separate annual volumes entitled Bibliography of Medical Reviews/List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus, and Medical Subject Headings(Ref. R 5 C82) (online at NLM at MEDICAL SUBJECT HEADINGS). MEDLINEplus Health Information includes access to additional medical reference works, including a medical encyclopedia, drug information, clinical trials information, current health news, and directories of doctors, hospitals and dentists. To access Medline in MEDLINEplus select "Other Resources," then select Medline. Other important indexes containing citations of medical interest are: Biological Abstracts (Ref. QH 301 B37), Chemical Abstracts (Ref. QD 1 A51),Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (Ref. RT 1 C8), and Current Advances in Physiology (Ref. QP 1 C88). Dictionary of Syndromes and Inherited Disorders. 2000. (Ref. RC 69 G55 2000)
Describes 100 syndromes and disorders. Emphasis is placed on the lesser known syndromes. For information on over 3,000 syndromes consult Dictionary of Medical Syndromes (Ref. RC 69 M33 1990).

Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary. 2000. (Ref. R 121 D73 2000)
This extensive 29th edition includes over 8,000 new medical terms and nearly 900 illustrations.


Mosbys Medical, Nursing, and Allied Health Dictionary. 2001. (Ref. Desk R 121 M89 2001)
Provides medium-length definitions of medical and health terms and includes color illustrations and an "Atlas of Human Anatomy." See also: Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary (Ref. A condensed version of  The Cambridge World History of Human Disease. This "dictionary" provides essays on the history and description of the world's major diseases.


Encyclopedia of Birth Control. 2001. (Ref.HQ 766 E52 2001)
An encyclopedic survey of the history and sociology of birth control on an international basis. Includes an appended "World Survey of Birth Control Practices."


Encyclopedia of Drugs, Alcohol and Addictive Behavior. 4 vols. 2001. (Ref. HV 5804 E53)
A compendium of information on the effects of addictions including a complete survey of drug alcohol addiction. Includes the latest information on brain imaging.


Encyclopedia of Infectious Diseases. 1998. (Ref. RC 112 T87 1998)
A guide to a wide range of infectious diseases and their causes. Includes additional information and organizations that deal with each disease.


The Encyclopedia of Obesity and Eating Disorders. 2000. (Ref. RC 552 E18 C37 1994)

Encyclopedia of Phobias, Fears, and Anxieties. 2000. (Ref. RC 535 D63 2000)
Describes in depth the various aspects of phobias, fears, and anxieties for the layperson as well as the health-care professional. The longer essays includes references for further information.

This source provides a brief history of psychotic disorders, defines important terms in the field, and includes biographical sketches of important people involved in the discovery and treatment of these disorders.

Contains almost 400 articles on all aspects of stress experienced by humans and animals.

The Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine. 5 vols. 2006.
This multi-volume work contains almost 1,500 full-length articles on medical disorders, conditions, tests, and treatments.


The Gale Encyclopedia of Mental Disorders. 2 vols. (Ref. RC 437 G35 2002)
This medical reference encyclopedia provides essays on mental disorders, diagnostic techniques and tests, therapies and tests, and psychiatric medications. Each essay includes additional references.


The Oxford Companion to the Body. 2001. (Ref. QM 7 O96)
Over 350 experts contributed essays on over 1,000 topics for this encyclopedia on all aspects of the human body. Includes appended color plates of the male and female anatomy.

A guide to laboratory and diagnostic tests that includes "normal findings" and "abnormal findings."

Physician's Desk Reference (PDR). Annual. (Ref. Desk RS 75 P5) & FWB
A handbook describing over 2,000 prescription drug products and their proper dosages. Designed for use by physicians. Extensively indexed by brand name, company, generic name, chemical name, drug classification, and other terms. Supplements included as "pocket parts."  Multiple cross-indexes to the contents of the PDR are provided by the Physicians' Desk Reference Companion Guide (Ref. Desk RS 75 P37 58th 2004). Includes text and statistics on mental health issues. Emphasis is placed on government programs such as Medicare.


Statistical Record of Health and Medicine. 1998. (Ref. RA 407.3 S732 1998)
A comprehensive compilation of medical and health statistics presented in 950 tables. Includes national, state, and municipal statistics obtained from government, academic, association, trade, technical, and media sources.


Vital Statistics of the United States. Annual. (Gov. Docs. HE 20:6210:)
A definitive three-volume publication giving basic data on natality, mortality, marriage and divorce. Volume 2 focuses on deaths and death rates with geographic breakdown by detailed causes, infant and fetal deaths, cause and place of fatal accidents, and life tables.
