Databases

Databases are the most efficient way of identifying journal articles on specific subjects. Databases index journal articles, books, conference proceedings, reports, and other materials. Databases may be searched individually or in categorized groups via Metalib. If you are searching for a journal title, look it up in the Online Catalog or the CitationLinker, SFX. If we do not own, or have access to, a journal you need, you may request it from Interlibrary Loan. If you are unsure about the quality of the journals you are using, consult the online tutorial, Scholarly Journals vs. Popular Magazines.

The most frequently used databases in biology are:

BasicBIOSIS.  Current Five Years - (FirstSearch)
Core life science journals in all areas of biology are indexed in this comprehensive database, which is actually a condensed view of BIOSIS. Explanations of abbreviations of serial titles may be found in BIOSIS Serials Sources (Ref. Desk QH 301 S585). The full version of BIOSIS is available via Datastar (see reference librarian for details about this dial up service).
Biological Abstracts . 1969-  (Ebsco)
Biological Abstracts is produced by BIOSIS, and is a complete collection of bibliographic references covering life science and biomedical research literature published from more than 4,000 journals internationally. This database provides users with access to the latest information in virtually every life science discipline. Biological Abstracts contains nearly 7.7 million archival records from 1969, with more than 370,000 citations added each year.
Biological & Agricultural Index. 1983-  (WilsonWeb)
Over 350 biological and agricultural journals are indexed in this database, many of which are available full text.
Biology Digest.  1989-  (Cambridge)
This database provides indexing for domestic and international literature in the area of life sciences.
Biological Sciences.  1989-  (Cambridge)
Biological Sciences offers abstracts and citations to a wide range of research in biomedicine, biotechnology, zoology and ecology, and some aspects of agriculture and veterinary science. Supporting over two dozen areas of expertise, this CSA database provides access to literature from over 6000 serials, as well as conference proceedings, technical reports, monographs and selected books and patents.
Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.  (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts)
This database service provides access to over 70 Cambridge Scientific databases arranged under 10 broad categories. Searches may be conducted by database categories, or within selected databases. The database categories include: Agricultural Sciences, Aquatic Sciences, Biological and Medical Sciences, Computer Technology, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Engineering Specialties, Materials Science, Market Research, and the Social Sciences.
ScienceDirect (Elsevier)
This comprehensive science database provides indexing and selective full text coverage of journal literature in all the sciences. Extensive coverage of biology journal literature is provided.
Wiley Interscience (Wiley)
Wiley Interscience is an online database that contains full text coverage of 1,000 journals, major reference works, online books. Excellent representation of biology is provided. Journal holdings may change as online services add titles to their databases. Use our CitationLinker, SFX to look for a specific article, book or journal. SFX will lead you to the online or print source of the title. If we do not own, or have access to, a journal you need, you may request it from Interlibrary Loan.
Sea Grant Abstracts. 1986-  (Ref. GC 1 S43)
Subtitled: "Publications From The Nation's Sea Grant Programs," each publication is described with an extensive abstract.
Zoological Record Online. 1978- (DIALOG)
This database provides worldwide coverage of the zoological literature with emphasis on the taxonomic and systematic information of zoology obtained from approximately 6,000 journals. Earlier coverage is available in the Zoological Record, 1864-1948 (Serials Microcard S-48). 1949-1992. (Ref. QL 1 Z7).
