Databases

Databases index journal articles, books, conference proceedings, reports, and other materials. Databases may be searched individually or in categorized groups via Metalib. If you are searching for a journal title, look it up in the Online Catalog or the CitationLinker, SFX. If we do not own, or have access to, a journal you need, you may request it from Interlibrary Loan. If you are unsure about the quality of the journals you are using, consult the online tutorial, Scholarly Journals vs. Popular Magazines.

The most frequently used maritime studies databases are:

America History and Life. 1964+  (ABC-CLIO)
An online index to over 2,000 journals published worldwide that deal with the history of the United States and Canada. Entries include extensive abstracts. Book and media reviews from over one hundred journals are included.


Anthropology Plus. 1900+ (Eureka)
This database is a combination of Anthropological Literature from Harvard University and Anthropological Index from the Royal Anthropological Institute. It provides worldwide indexing of journal articles, reports, commentaries, edited works, and obituaries in the fields of anthropology and archaeology.


BIOSIS. 1970+  (DataStar)
BasicBIOSIS. Current 5 years. (FirstSearch)
This online database is the computerized version of Biological Abstracts 1927-1995, (Periodicals QH 301 B37). The online version contains over 10.5 million records from over 6,000 journals and monographs. BasicBIOSIS is a condensed version of BIOSIS and provides indexing to 375 core life science journals and is updated weekly. Explanations of abbreviations of serial titles used in these indexes may be found in BIOSIS Serials Sources (Ref. Desk QH 301 S585). Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management. 1967+  (Cambridge)
This database provides indexing to the principle multidisciplinary journals from the environmental sciences. An excellent source for references to the underwater environment, shipwrecks, and govenment policy.


Expanded Academic Index. 1980+  (InfoTrac)
A general interest index to nearly 1,000 multi-disciplinary journals. A surprisingly good source for recent articles on topics related to maritime studies. Some full-text articles are available through this database.


Historical Abstracts. 1450+  (ABC-CLIO)
An online index to scholarly journals, books, and dissertations on world history (excluding the U.S. and Canada). The U.S. and Canada are covered in the America History and Life database.


Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe  (Lexis-Nexis)
A comprehensive database that contains full-text coverage of Federal and state laws, cases, and regulations. It also provides access to full-text legal periodicals and newspapers.


Oceanic Abstracts. 1964+  (DIALOG)
Oceanic Abstracts. 1981+  (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts)
This database provides access to the worldwide technical literature on the marine and brackish-water environment. Coverage of living and non-living resources, including shipwrecks, is comprehensive.


Wilson Select Plus. 1994+  (FirstSearch)
A multidisciplinary database consisting of full-text articles from over 1,600 popular and scholarly journals. An excellent source for initiating a search on contemporary as well as historical topics.


Worldwide Political Science Abstracts. 1975+  (Cambridge)
This valuable database provides citations, abstracts, and selected full-text articles of the international periodical literature in political science and related fields, including international relations, law, public administration, and public policy.

Bibliographies

An Introductory Bibliography of Maritime References for the New World and the Spanish Empire Therein, 1491-1821. 1986. (Ref. Z 6201 B226)
A bibliographic guide to for those seeking information about Spain's contributions to maritime history and technology. In addition to listing basic source materials, some English-language interpretative titles are included when comparable Spanish-language sources are lacking.


Catalog of Marine Prints and Paintings. 3 vols. 1964. (Special Collections NE 957 M35)
Subtitled: "Contains Reproductions of Main and Secondary Entry Cards Owned by the Museum." This is a reprint of the catalog cards of the marine prints and paintings in the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Va.


Coastal and Maritime Archaeology: A Bibliography. 1991. (CC 77 U5 K45 1991)
A bibliography on coastal and maritime archaeology that is international in scope, with special emphasis on northeastern North America. Includes over 2,800 references on indigenous peoples and divided by time into prehistoric, historic, and contemporary periods.


An Indexed Bibliography of Underwater Archaeology and Related Topics. 1996. (CC 77 U5 I43 1996)

Based on international sources, this bibliography is arranged by regions with appended name and author indexes.

Encyclopedia of the Dead Sea Scrolls. 2 vol. 2000. (Ref. BM 487 E53 2000) & FWB
Summarizes in medium-length essays the research conducted over the last half century on all aspects of the dead sea scrolls and related antiquarian documents. Each essay includes a bibliography of sources.


Encyclopedia of Underwater and Maritime Archaeology. 1998. (Ref. CC 77 U5 E53 1998)
This illustrated guide consists of over 500 articles on shipwrecks, submerged cities and harbors, research themes, legislation and the techniques of underwater archaeology.

This atlas contains essays and maps depicting the maritime history of Florida with emphasis on the submerged cultural resources of the state. It includes an appended "Sources and Further Reading."


Atlas of Maritime History. 1975. (Ref. Atlas G 1060 L65 1975)
A collection of maps that display the maritime history of the western world from the Greeks to modern times. Emphasis is placed on commerce and warfare


The Atlas of Shipwrecks and Treasure. 1994. (Ref.Atlas G 1046 P57 P5 1994)
Subtitled: "The History, Location, and Treasures of Ships Lost at Sea," this highly illustrated atlas describes numerous shipwrecks that are well known for their treasure. Includes an appended regional chronology of important wrecks

This source summarizes the resources and transportation linkages of the world's oceans. This is an annotated bibliography of accounts of the American continent by travelers and observers of the American scene from the period 1527-1860. It is continued by Coulter's Travels in the Confederate States, 1860-1865, (Ref. Z 1251 S7 C68) and Travels in the Confederate States (Ref. Z 1251 S7 C68).
