Databases

Databases index journal articles, books, conference proceedings, reports, and other materials. Databases may be searched individually or in categorized groups via Metalib.

If you are searching for a journal title, look it up in the Online Catalog or the CitationLinker, SFX. If we do not own, or have access to, a journal you need, you may request it from Interlibrary Loan. If you are unsure about the quality of the journals you are using, consult the online tutorial, Scholarly Journals vs. Popular Magazines.

The most frequently used databases in health and exercise are:

Cambridge Scientific Abstracts
This database service provides access to over 70 Cambridge Scientific databases arranged under 10 broad categories. Searches may be conducted by database categories, or within selected databases. The database categories include: Agricultural Sciences, Aquatic Sciences, Biological and Medical Sciences, Computer Technology, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Engineering Specialties, Materials Science, Market Research, and the Social Sciences. Some citations link to full-text journal articles provided by  Science Direct  or  Kluwer.


CINAHL. 1982+  (EBSCOhost)
An index to over 300 major journals as well as books and dissertations in nursing and health. An excellent source for locating journal articles dealing with the treatment of sports injuries. Published 1956-1976 as a printed index entitled Cumulative Index to Nursing Literature, and 1977- as Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, these titles are available 1956-1997 in the Reference collection (Ref. RT 1 C8).


Dissertation Abstracts. 1861+  (EBSCOhost)
An annotated compilation of English language and selected foreign language doctoral dissertations and theses. Comprehensive Dissertation Index (Periodicals Z 5055 U5 A529 1973) covers the years 1861-1978 along with subsequent cumulations to 1991. Also available in CD-ROM 1861-1992 at the reference desk


ERIC. 1967+  (Cambridge)  and  ERIC E*Subscribe. 1966+  (EDRS)
Comprehensive index to over 800 journals in the field of education as well as over 400,000 research reports on microfiche. Entries include brief abstracts indexed by subject, author and title. Subject headings used in this index are listed in the Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors (Ref. Desk LB 1028 E39 1995) & FWB. This database is the computerized version of the printed indexes entitled Current Index to Journals in Education and Resources in Education.


Expanded Academic Index.. 1982+  (InfoTrac)
A general interest index to nearly 1,000 multi-disciplinary journals. A good source for recent articles on topics related to health and physical education. Includes some full-text articles


Health and Wellness Resource Center  (InfoTrac)
Includes information from the folowing sub-files "Medical Encyclopedia," "Drug and Herb Finder," "Health Assessment Tools," "Health Organization Directory," "Medical Dictionary," "Links to Other Sites," and "Health News."


MEDLINE. 1993+  (Cambridge),  MEDLINE. 1965+  (FirstSearch),  MEDLINE. 1966+  (National Library of Medicine),  and  MEDLINEplus Health Information  (NLM)
A comprehensive index to approximately 3,000 medical and health periodicals which corresponds to the printed Index Medicus (Periodicals R 5 C8) and covers all aspects of health and sports medicine. MEDLINEplus Health Information includes access to additional medical reference works, including a medical encyclopedia, drug information, clinical trials information, current health news, and directories of doctors, hospitals and dentists.


Physical Education Index. 1970+  (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts)
A subject index to articles in journals pertaining to all aspects of physical education, health and leisure. Includes access to selected full-text journal articles.

Contemporary jargon of the sport is explained with short to medium-length definitions. Includes black and white illustrations and an appended bibliography


The Oxford Dictionary of Sports Science and Medicine. 1998. (Ref. RC 1206 O94 1998)
Over 7,500 terms are defined in this specialized dictionary which also includes numerous cross-references. A list of banned performance-enhancing drugs and procedures is presented in Appendix 1.

Quick Reference Dictionary for Athletic Training. (NetLibrary)
Over 2000 terms related to athletic training are defined in this dictionary. There are 20 appendices that add to the usefulness of this reference source.

A chronological survey of the sport with an emphasis on the major personalities involved in the game


The Cambridge World History of Food. 2 vols. 2000. (Ref. TX 353 C255 2000)
This multi-volume work is a collection of essays on food, health and disease. The essays are an attempt to provide a comprehensive review of what is known about human health.


The Chess Encyclopedia. 1991. (Ref. GV 1314.5 D58 1991)
An illustrated encyclopedia which includes brief biographical references to important personalities in the game. See also Golombek's Encyclopedia of Chess (Ref. GV 1314.5 G64 1977) and The Oxford Companion to Chess (Ref. GV 1445 H616 1996).

This multi-volume encyclopedia covers the multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary aspects of the field and includes many cross-references and sources for "Further Reading."


Encyclopedia of Public Health. 4 vols. 2002 (Ref. RA 423 E53 2002)
Contains over 900 entries for the lay reader on the skills, organizaion, functions, and history of the field of public health. Each essay includes an appended bibliography.

A compilation of data on the leagues, franchises, teams, nicknames and playing facilities of major professional leagues in various sports. Includes information on more than 3200 teams and 200 leagues


World Encyclopedia of Soccer. 1994. (Ref. GV 943 L2 1994)
Provides detailed narratives of all aspects of the sport including rules of the game, biographical sketches of the major players, as well as a survey of the status of soccer in each country. A glossary is appended.
