Databases

Databases index journal articles, books, conference proceedings, reports, and other materials. Databases may be searched individually or in categorized groups via Metalib. If you are searching for a journal title, look it up in the Online Catalog or the CitationLinker, SFX. If we do not own, or have access to, a journal you need, you may request it from Interlibrary Loan. If you are unsure about the quality of the journals you are using, consult the online tutorial, Scholarly Journals vs. Popular Magazines.

The most frequently used geology databases are:

Applied Science and Technology Abstracts. 1983+ (FirstSearch)
A multi-subject index to diverse science journals including many key journals from the field of geology. This source is also available in print as Industrial Arts Index 1914-1957, and as Applied Science and Technology Index 1958-1982 (Ref. T 1 A53).


Bibliography of Gulf Coast Geology. 4 vols. 1970-74. (Ref. QE 100 G338 B53)
This ia an extensive bibliography and index of gulf coast geological literature published by the Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies. Volumes 1 and 2 cover literature through 1968, Volume 3 covers literature through 1974, and Volume 4 covers literature through 1979. See also Comprehensive Index of the Publications of the Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies, 1951-1965 (Ref. QE 100 G338 M38).

This extensive dictionary defines over 37,000 geological terms, including over 4,000 mineral names and provides an extensive list of "References Cited."


McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Earth Sciences. 1984. (Ref. QE 5 M365 1984)
The terms used in eighteen fields of study are defined in this dictionary - each brief entry includes a notation identifying the field in which it is primarily used.


The Penguin Dictionary of Physical Geography. 1984. (Ref. GB 10 W43)

The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Earth Sciences. 1981. (Ref. QE 26.2 C35 1981)
A highly-illustrated guide to the earth and its atmosphere, environment, history, and geology. A helpful glossary of earth science terms is appended.


The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Meteorites. 2002. (Ref. QB 755 N65 2002)
Includes illustrated chapters on the various classses of meteorites with descriptions to atomic level


Color Encyclopedia of Gemstones. 1987. (Ref. QE 392 A69 1987)
A survey of all the mineral species that have been cut as gems. Includes excellent color photographs. See also Gems, Minerals, Crystals and Ores: The Collector's Encyclopedia (Ref. QE 392 P357 1967).


The Encyclopedia of Applied Geology. 1984. (Ref. QE 5 E5 1984)
An encyclopedia of that area of geology that is related to human activity. Each essay contains excellent bibliographical references.


Encyclopedia of Earth Sciences. 2 vols. (Ref. QE 5 E5137 1996)
A collection of signed essays with bibliographical references which attempt to describe the earth through the study of physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and paleontology


Encyclopedia of Earth System Science. 4 vols. 1992. (Ref. QE 5 E514 1992)
A compilation of authoritative articles on the physical science of the earth. Includes bibliographic references, and a glossary of terms


The Encyclopedia of Field and General Geology. 1988. (Ref. QE 5 E515 1988)
A highly-illustrated collection of essays for the professional geologist which includes topics covered with environmental geology. References are appended to each essay.


Encyclopedia of Geochemistry. 1999. (Ref. QE 515 E48 1999)
The evolution of the earth and the planetary system are explained with essays on the methods and philosophy of chemistry. Each essay includes an appended bibliography.


Encyclopedia of Geomorphology. 2 vols. 2004. (Ref. GB 400.3 E53 2004)
A comprehensive guide consisting of almost 700 entries by international experts on specific landforms and the major types of processes that created them.


Encyclopedia of Minerals. 1990. (Ref. QE 355 R6 1990)
A desktop encyclopedia providing detailed data on most known mineral species. Includes black and white photos


Encyclopedia of Paleontology. 2 vols. 1999. (Ref. QE 703 E58 1999)
This collection of articles attempts to describe all major groups of fossil organisms. Includes black and white illustrations and bibliogrpahical references

The Encyclopedia of Structural Geology and Plate Tectonics 1987. (Ref. QE 601 E53 1987)
Provides illustrated interpretive essays on the classical concepts in structural geology and plate tectonics with bibliographical references


McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of the Geological Sciences. 1988. (Ref. QE 5 M29 1988) & FWB
Contains over 500 signed articles on the physical and historical procedures and interactions of the earth. Bibliographical references follow many of the articles.


MaGill's Survey of Science. 6 vols. 1990. supplement 1998. (Ref. QE 28 M33 1990)
The earth and solar system are described in 377 articles emphasizing many of the sub-fields of geology, including physical geology, geomorphology, glacial geology, mineralogy and petroleum geology.


The Oxford Companion to the Earth. 2000. (Ref. QE 5 O94 2000)
A source of essays on the phenomena, processes, and materials that make up the Earth. Includes charts, diagrams and black and white photos


Regional Stratigraphy of North America. 1987. (Ref. QE 651 F75 1987)
A survey of the stratigraphy of the various regions of North America


Sciences of the Earth. 2 vols. 1998. (Ref. QE 11 S38 1998)
Subtitled "An Encyclopedia of Events, People, and Phenomena," this multi-volume work presents a history of the geosciences of the earth with an emphasis on historiography.

This guide to the fossils of North America north of Mexico contains excellent color plates.


A Color Atlas of Rocks and Minerals in Thin Section. 1994. (Ref. QE 434 M33 1994)
Provides color photographs of magnified views of rocks and minerals with detailed descriptive data for identification purposes


Dana's New Mineralogy. 1997. (Ref. QE 372 D23 1997)
This handbook attempts to "describe, catalog and classify all known and recognized minerals reported in the literature up to December 31, 1995." It includes illustrations and bibliographical references.


Earth Treasures. 2 vols. 1987. (Ref. QE 375 E27 1987)
Subtitled "Where to Collect Minerals, Rocks, and Fossils in the United States." Contents: Vol. 1; The Northeastern Quadrant, Vol. 2; The Southeastern Quadrant


Handbook of Rocks, Minerals, and Gemstones. 1993. (Ref. QE 433.8 S3813 1993)
