Biomechanics
This Study Guide contains references to Biomechanics in print and electronic formats. To initiate research in this field of study the researcher should consult the Eli guides entitled
Athletic Training and Sports Medicine,
Health/Leisure/Exercise,
Medicine, and
Nursing.
To locate sources in the John C. Pace Library search the UWF catalog. Useful subject headings include:
Biomechanics, Human Locomotion, Human Mechanics, Kinesiology, Sports Injuries,
Sports Medicine, and Peak Performance.
Databases
- Academic Index ASAP. 1980- (InfoTrac)
- A general interest index to nearly 1,000 multi-disciplinary journals.
A surprisingly good source for recent articles on biomechanics. Some articles
are full-text.
- Cambridge Scientific Abstracts. (Cambridge)
- This database service provides access to over 70 Cambridge Scientific
databases arranged under 10 broad categories. For research on Biomechanics,
select the "Biological and Medical Sciences" category for best
results. Search results from this index includes some full-text articles that
are linked to the full-text journals found in some of the
"E-Journals" packages to which the Florida State University System
subscribes. These full-text databases may be searched individually to take
full advantage of all of the journals within them since some of these journals
may not link to the Cambridge category you have selected. Some of the
more productive full-text journal packages are
Elsevier
Science Direct, and Springer. Additionally, the nearly 2,000
journals from the ejournal packages may searched individually from
Journals Available Online.
- CINAHL. 1982- (EBSCOhost)
- An index to over 300 major journals as well as books and dissertations in nursing and
health. An excellent source for locating journal articles dealing with the treatment of
sports injuries. Published 1956-1976 as a printed index entitled Cumulative Index to
Nursing Literature, and 1977- as Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health
Literature. These titles are available 1956-1981 in the Reference collection (Ref. RT
1 C8).
- Engineering Index
1970-1999, Current, (WebLUIS)
- This online index replicates the printed version of Engineering Index.
It is also available under the name EI Compendex in Dialog (1970- )and
DataStar (1976- ). Over 1,500 engineering journals, technical reports,
engineering society publications, books, and over 600 conference proceedings
and papers are included in this database. Numerous references on the analysis of
biomechanics are included.
- MEDLINE. 1993+ (Cambridge)
MEDLINE. 1965+ (First Search)
MEDLINE. 1966+ (National Library of Medicine)
- A comprehensive index to approximately 3,000 medical and health periodicals which
corresponds to the printed Index Medicus (Periodicals R 5 C8) and covers all
aspects of health, exercise and sports medicine.
- Physical Education Index 1970+ (Cambridge)
- A subject index to articles in journals pertaining to all aspects of physical education,
health and leisure.
- SciSearch. 1980- (DataStar)
- SciSearch. 1974- (DIALOG)
- This database corresponds to the printed indexes Science Citation Index
and Current Contents. This an international multidisciplinary index to
the international literature of science and technology and contains many references
to sports, health and the biomechanics of sports. This database requires mediated
assistance.
- SPORTDiscus. 1949- (DataStar)
- SPORT Discus. 1949- (DIALOG)
- This online database provides international coverage to all aspects of
research in sports medicine, exercise physiology, biomechanics, sports psychology,
training, coaching, physical fitness, facilities, equipment, recreation and
leisure. This data base requires mediated assistance.
Dictionaries
- The Oxford Dictionary of Sports Science and Medicine. 1998. (Ref. RC 1206
O94 1998)
- Over 7,500 terms are defined in this specialized dictionary which also includes
numerous cross-references.
Encyclopedias
- Encyclopedia of Sport Science. 2 Vols. 1997. (Ref. GV 558 E53 1997)
- An illustrated guide to the physics of sports activities and the physics and
physiology of the human body with numerous essays on the biomechanics of specific
sports.
Handbooks
- A Primer of Biomechanics. 1999. (Ref. QP 303 L83 1999)
- This handbook of biomechanics emphasizes orthopaedic problems with an emphasis
on forces, force dimensions, velocity and similar problems related to biomechanical
functioning.
