Indexes and Databases

Databases index journal articles, books, conference proceedings, reports, and other materials. Databases may be searched individually or in categorized groups via Metalib.

If you are searching for a journal title, look it up in the Online Catalog or the CitationLinker, SFX. If we do not own, or have access to, a journal you need, you may request it from Interlibrary Loan. If you are unsure about the quality of the journals you are using, consult the online tutorial, Scholarly Journals vs. Popular Magazines.

The most frequently used databases in athletic training are:

Academic Index ASAP. 1980-
Over 3,500 journals in social science, humanities, and science, including 1,900 full-text and 1,400 peer reviewed titles, are indexed in this database. Basic and advanced searches with various limiting capabilities facilitate the use of this comprehensive database.


Basic Biosis. Current five years. (First Search)
Biosis indexes the core biology and life science journals. It covers over 370 popular and scholarly titles.


Biotechnology and Bioengineering Abstracts. 1982+ (CSA Illumina)
Biotechnology and Bioengineering Abstracts provides bibliographic coverage of research, applications, and regulations across all areas of biotechnology and bioengineering.


Cambridge Scientific Abstracts(CSA Illumina)
This database service provides access to over 70 Cambridge Scientific databases arranged into 10 broad categories. Excellent coverage of medical, biomechanical, and other sports related journals and publications are indexed in CSA.


CINAHL. 1982+  (Ebsco Host)
This database is the most comprehensive index to nursing and allied health journals and publications. CINAHL is an excellent source for locating journal articles on the treatment of sports injuries.


ERIC. 1966+ (CSA Illumina)
ERIC*Subscribe. 1966+ (EDRS)
ERIC is a government sponsored database that provides comprehensive indexing of education journals and resources. Articles on physical education topics are contained in ERIC.


Health and Wellness Resource Center  (Gale)
The Health and Wellness Resource Center provides full text information from medical dictionaries, encyclopedias, journals, and other resources. This comprehensive health database covers most areas of sports medicine.


MDX Health Digest. 1988+ (First Search)
MDX Health Digest is a consumer health database that provides answers to medical questions

MEDLINE (PubMed). 1966+  (National Library of Medicine)
A comprehensive index to approximately 3,000 medical and health periodicals which corresponds to the printed Index Medicus (R 5 C8). It covers all aspects of health, exercise and sports medicine. Citations prior to the mid-1960s can be found in NLM's  OLDMEDLINE database.


PsycINFO. 1840+  (ProQuest)
Provides access to international literature in psychology, behavioral sciences and other related disciplines including medicine, motivation, and pain management.


Physical Education Index. 1990-2000. (Ref. GV 201 P47
Physical Education Index  1970+ (Cambridge)
This a subject index to articles in journals pertaining to all aspects of physical education, health and leisure.


SciSearch. 1980- (DataStar)
SciSearch. 1974+ (DIALOG)
SciSearch is the online version of the printed indexes Science Citation Index and Current Contents. It is an international multidisciplinary index to the literature of science and technology which contains many references to sports, health and the biomechanics of sports. This database requires mediated assistance.

SPORT Discus. 1975+ (DIALOG)
This online database provides international coverage to all aspects of research in sports medicine, exercise physiology, biomechanics, sports psychology, training, coaching, physical fitness, facilities, equipment, recreation and leisure. The SPORT Discus database is restricted to UWF students and faculty. It requires a password and mediated assistance. Please ask at the Reference Desk for assistance.

Many sports medicine and general medical dictionaries are available in the Reference Collection in the R 121 and RC 1200 call number areas. Here are a few representative titles:

Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary. 2000. (Ref. R 121 D73 2000)
Over 8,000 new medical terms and nearly 900 illustrations are contained in this new edition of Dorland's.


Mosbys Medical, Nursing, and Allied Health Dictionary. 2001. (Ref. Desk R 121 M89)
This dictionary contains medium-length definitions of medical and health terms. It also includes color illustrations and an "Atlas of Human Anatomy.".


Oxford Dictionary of Sports Science and Medicine. 1998. (Ref. RC 1206 O94)
Over 7,500 terms are defined in this specialized dictionary which includes numerous cross-references.

An illustrated guide to the physics of sports activities and the physics and physiology of the human body with numerous essays on the biomechanics of specific sports.

An online encyclopedia that provides paragraph length overviews of concepts from adventure sports to physical training. Cross references and indexes to terms facilitate the usefulness of this source.

Handbooks provide information in a one volume source on a variety of topics. Examples of handbooks in athletic training and sports medicine are:

This is a practical guide to nutrition for fitness. Chapter titles include: "Food Choices for Fitness" and "Athlete's Guide: Winning Nutrition."


Concepts of Athletic Training. 1998. (netLibrary)
This book covers sports injuries from medical, legal, preventative, and psychological perspectives. It is designed to provide trainers and coaches with information that will help them recognize and treat sports injuries. The healing process of specific injuries is introduced in detail.


Fitness and Exercise Sourcebook. 2001. (Ref. GV 436 F53)
Includes basic health information about how to begin and maintain a fitness program and how to follow proper diet and fitness regimes. It also describes how diet and fitness deficits may cause specific medical conditions.


Handbook of Sport Psychology. 2001. (Ref. GV 706.4 H37)
Essays on the interaction of physiology and psychology on performance in sports are provided in this handbook.


Primer of Biomechanics. 1999. (Ref. QP 303 L83)
This handbook of biomechanics emphasizes orthopaedic problems such as forces, force dimensions, velocity, and other problems related to biomechanical functioning.
