An online database indexing over 750 periodical articles about multicultural education. Many of the articles are in full-text format and can be retrieved by using "multicultural education" as the keyword search term. Searching by subject using the terms "intercultural education" and "minority students--education" will also locate additional articles in this subject area.


African American Biographical Database. (Chadwyck-Healy)
The African American Biographical Database is a resource of first resort when looking for biographical information about African-Americans. From the famous to the everyday person, AABD includes profiles and full-text sketches providing both biographical detail and illuminating narratives chronicling the lives of Black Americans. Photographs and illustrations of the persons are also included.


Article First. 1990- (FirstSearch)
An online database indexing approximately 462 periodical articles about multicultural education. This database indexes articles from 12,600 journals in science, technology, medicine, social science, business, the humanities, and popular culture.


Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE). 1967-
CIJE, which is part of the ERIC online system, indexes over 2,300 journal articles about multicultural education when this term is used in the advanced search mode as a major descriptor. To access only journal articles, you must click CIJE in the format box which is located in the lower left hand corner of the search screen. Printed version is available in the Pace Library's reference collection for the years 1969 to 1992 under call number (Ref. L 11 C8)


Education Abstracts. 1983- (FirstSearch)
An online database indexing over 2,700 articles about multicultural education. However, none of the articles found in this database are full-text.


PsycINFO. 1887-
A computerized index which contains abstracts of journal articles, books, book chapters and doctoral dissertations about various psychological subjects and conditions including many related to the field of multicultural education. This database is not full-text. It can be assessed from most of the library's computers and also from remote locations. The printed index, Psychological Abstracts, is located in the reference collection under the call number (Ref. BF  1 P65).


Resources in Education (RIE). 1966-
RIE is part of the ERIC online system. It indexes 2,300 documents and reports about multicultural education when this term is used in an advanced search as a major descriptor. All of the documents are on microfiche and can be found only in the ERIC microfiche collection in reference on the first floor of the John C. Pace Library. The current file covers items from 1988 to the present, and the backfile covers items from 1967 to 1987. The printed source for this index can also be found in the reference collection under call number (Ref. LB 1028 R340).


Wilson Select. 1994- (FirstSearch)
Wilson Select is a full-text database that indexes articles from about 180 education and education related journals.

Our Family, Our Friends, Our World: An Annotated Guide to Significant Multicultural Books for Children and Teenagers. 1992. (Ref. PN 1009 A1 M5)
Provides a long-standing need for a reference work that provides children and their parents, teachers, and librarians with evaluations of the large array of fiction and nonfiction on multicultural themes. This work contains annotations for approximately 1,000 multicultural books published between 1970 and 1990. An excellent source for assessing books that deal with the diverse cultures in the United States, Canada and the rest of the world.

Dictionary of Cultural Literacy. 1988. (E 169.1 H6)
Attempts to identify and define common cultural knowledge rather than to present a lexicon of words or topics.


Dictionary of Latin American Racial and Ethnic Terminology. 1999. (Ref. GN 562 S74)
Designed as a reference for speakers of English interested in topics of race and ethnicity in the Americas. Contains approximately 7,000 entries, incorporating historical, literary, political, sociological, anthropological, and linguistic information, and current colloquialisms.


Dictionary of Race and Ethnic Relations. 1995. (Ref. GN 496 C37)
This book falls somewhere between a dictionary and an encyclopedia, the former being a work setting out and explaining the vocabulary of a language or subject, the latter a literary, more comprehensive work of information on all branches of knowledge.


Dictionary of Multicultural Education. 1997. (Ref. LC 1099 D53)
Focus is to help explicate the meanings and perspectives of various terms that are used in multicultural education. It addresses both the literal meaning of the words and terms as well as the conceptual meanings and exemplars that help create those meanings. No biographical entries are included in this volume.

This resource brings together many multicultural topics, and it features scholarship that cannot be found elsewhere in a single source. It examines American history and society through the experience of diverse groups whose concerns and contributions have often been overlooked.


International Encyclopedia of Education: Research and Studies. 12 volumes. 1994. (Ref. LB 15 I569)
An excellent collection of scholarly works in education that includes signed articles with good bibliographies. Consult Volume 12 for a complete listing of entries by subject.


Multicultural Resources. 1996. (Ref. HD 62.4 I5625)
Intended for use by people seeking international and multicultural assistance which is related to developing the multicultural workplace. Provides resources in seven useful areas: consulting and training, organizations, publishers, publications, learning aids, services, and academic programs.

Study Abroad 2004-2005. 32nd edition. (Ref. LB 2338 S86 v.32 2004/2005)
This work, compiled by UNESCO, outlines over 2,700 opportunities for post-secondary studies in all academic and professional fields in 147 countries and territories, including courses and scholarships offered by international organizations and those offered by national authorities and institutions, as well as distance education opportunities. The directory includes only degree-granting institutions, thereby excluding language courses, summer schools, and seminars that do not offer degrees. Programs between partner schools are also excluded. Information is provided in English, French, or Spanish, according to the language in which it was submitted by the host organization or institution, and it should be assumed that the language of instruction is the national language of the country in which the program is offered.

An invaluable information tool for all those concerned with higher education in its international context. A concise directory including, in addition to universities, other institutions offering terminal degrees after three to four years of higher education.

This useful reference handbook provides an overview and discussion of the origins of the title's topic and presents multiple curricular approaches to multicultural education. The work also addresses political and legal issues surrounding the topic, as well as barriers to multiculturalism in the educational environment. The author also presents various case studies in multicultural education, while appendixes provide listings of related organizations and associations, print and non-print resources, and a glossary.

Offers in-depth profiles of most of the country's 200 top schools and seeks to fill the void left by the other guides by providing information which allows students of color to make confident and wise college choices. Includes a list of America's predominantly Black colleges and universities.

Almanacs

Ethnic Almanac. 1981. (Ref. E 184 A1 B426)
Looks at the customs, culture and traditions various ethnic groups brought to America from their homelands. It contains information culled from thousands of books, encyclopedias, periodicals, newspapers and private sources, all of which add up to a vivid ethnic picture of American history. A copy of this book is also in the Curriculum Materials Library, Bldg. 86.

China: Lunar Calendar

The Chinese Lunar Calendar is a yearly calendar like the western calendar, except that the start of the lunar year is based on the cycles of the moon. A Chinese prince began the practice of foot binding because he loved the small 'lily feet' of his concubine. Thus traditional Chinese values for over 1000 years dictated that the feet of young girls should be bound to keep them small. 'Lily feet', as they were called, were thought to be very dainty and beautiful and a symbol of gentility and high-class. Although the term sounded harmless, it was really a very cruel practice.
