Reference Guides

American Higher Education: A Guide to Reference Sources. 1993. (Ref. LA 226 .O44 1993)
A comprehensive overview of the literature of American higher education is arranged by type of material, as guides, dictionaries and encyclopedias, directories, handbooks, etc. The guide contains author, title, and subject indexes, making it an excellent tool for collection development.


Bibliographic Guide to Educational Research. 1990. (Ref. LB 17 B47)
Information is provided to assist students in the conduct of independent research. Important sources in the field are described.

Indexes and Abstracts

Academic Index ASAP. 1980- (Infotrac)
Includes many full-text articles from education periodicals.


Education Full Text. 1983- (WilsonWeb)
Over 400 English language publications are analyzed and indexed. Print version from 1929 to 1995 is also available (Ref L 11 C8).


ERIC. 1966- (Cambridge)
A package of educational materials containing journal articles and research documents in microfiche. Printed versions are also available as Current Index to Journals in Education and Resources in Education. Full-text of some journal articles is available in ERIC Cambridge. ERIC documents (also called ED reports) are located in the Reference collection on the 1st floor of the Pace Library. Some ED reports are available through the ERIC database provided by ERIC. The Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors (Ref. LB 1028 E39) contains the subject headings (descriptors) used to search the ERIC system.


Index to Anthologies on Postsecondary Education, 1960-1978. (Pace Ref. LB 2305 Q39)
This index was designed to mitigate initial literature review of a highly select cross section of research dealing with a wide variety of topics on postsecondary education. 87 per cent of the essays indexed are original publications not identifiable through standard sources. The topical entries are arranged in alphabetical order. There are also author and subject indexes.


Proquest Theses and Dissertations. 1861- (ProQuest)
Contains abstracts of doctoral dissertations completed at U.S. and foreign colleges and universities. Print version through 1990 is located in periodicals collection on the second floor of the Pace Library. Some Fulltext is available from Digital Dissertations.


PsycARTICLES. 1988- (American Psychological Association)
Contains full-text articles from APA journals back to 1988. Pertinent subject descriptors can be identified using the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms (Ref. BF 32 T48).


PsycINFO. 1887- (ProQuest)
Contains abstracts of articles, books, chapters from books, and dissertations, many of which are related to education.


Wilson Omnifile Fulltext. 1982- (WilsonWeb)
Full-text of journal articles from 1994 from hundreds of publications, including Education titles, can be retrieved from library computers and from remote locations. Includes u.S. and international professional publications, academic journals, and trade magazines.

Bibliographies

Published by the International Society for Technology in Education, this spiral bound resource begins with an introduction that describes the web, what it can do for teachers, and how to access it. The bulk of the work contains annotations of web sites that are recommended for different subject areas. Appendixes contain informatrion on newsgroups, listservs, and search tools.

Dictionaries and Encyclopedias

International Encyclopedia of Educational Technology. 1996. (Pace Ref LB 1028.3 I567 1996)
Educational technology is treated as a concept and as a field. Design functions, tools, and resources are covered in Section II. Section III deals with delivery options, applications and institutional settings and is followed by Section V, emerging issues.


International Encyclopedia of Higher Education. 1977. (Ref LB 15 I57)
This 10-volume set covering all aspects of higher education throughout the world was edited by Asa Knowles, Chancellor of Northeastern University, who acknowledged an impressive list of contributers. In addition to alphabetically arranged essays (descriptive, instructional, definitive, and theoretical), it contains an International Directory of Documentation and Information Centers, a Name Index, and a Subject Index. A list of related articles is given at the end of many essays.


International Higher Education: An Encyclopedia. 1990. (Pace Ref LB 15 I59)
This two-volume set, edited by Philip Altbach, is arranged by topics, regions, and countries. It contains a bibliography and an index.

This handbook serves as a factual reference source for careers in allied health. Prepared by editors of The Chronicle of Higher Education, this work contains statistics arranged by state. It also contains a section on education highlights.


Fact Book on Higher Education. 1997. (Ref. LA 227.3 A44a)
Published by the American Council on Education, this reference is divided into the following sections: (1) Demographic and Economic Data, (2) Enrollment Data, (3) Institutions and Finance, Faculty, Staff, and Students, and (4) Earned Degrees. Illustrated by various graphs.


Fact Book on Higher Education in the South. 1997. (Pace Ref. LA 230.5 S6 S64a)
Published by the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) which conducts studies on current issues in higher education by action programs for improvement of the regions' colleges and universities and by the dissemination of information useful for promotion of higher educational support and growth. Contains state profiles and selected statistics.


Fact Book on Women in Higher Education. 1991. (Pace Ref. LC 1756 T68 1991)
This book is divided into three main parts. Part one, an introduction, sets the context for the book and offers useful recommendations and guidance. Part two contains highlights and trends in narrative and visual form. Data are presented in chart or graph form, combined with observations in narrative form. Part three contains a section on data issues and sources, including a guide to sources, a complete bibliography, and the source tables on which information in part two is based.
