Library Technology Frequently Asked Questions
Introduction
The John C. Pace Library provides workstations that include internet access, production software, and network printing. The library partners
with ITS to provide free printouts per semester (500 for undergraduates and 1,000 for graduate students).
Log on to the library workstations on the first and second floors with your Argonet account to take advantage of the free printing service.
There is equipment at one of the workstations that has scanning capabilities.
You may also check out laptops
for in-library use that are compatible with the library's wireless environment. Because of the increasingly technical nature of the library
workstations, we provide some technical assistance as well as research assistance.
How do I set up encryption settings so that my laptop recognizes the library's wireless network?
The Library has moved to a campus standard wireless network called "Argo-Air." To utilize this network you must have a valid Argonet
account and follow the authentication procedures outlined in the services tab of ARGUS for wireless network setup.
What is the network protocol for my laptop?
TCP/IP is the only protocol you need to have installed on your laptop in order to utilize UWF networks.
How do I configure my laptop to work in the Library?
The Library has moved to a campus standard wireless network called "Argo-Air." To utilize this network you must have a valid Argonet account
and follow the authentication procedures outlined in the services tab of ARGUS for wireless network setup. If you require a wired connection you
must have a properly installed Ethernet pci card or built in port using a rj45 patch cable. Your pc must be configured to obtain a IP address using dhcp. Click here for instructions for setting up "Argo-Air."
How do I format my Word file for margins, fonts, etc.?
Margins may be set manually by pointing and dragging the mouse over the ruler tab on the top and side of the document in the print layout
or the print preview views. You may also set margins, paper size, and layout (portrait or landscape) by selecting file and page setup from the
drop down menus. If you only want to indent a portion of the document, use the format, paragraph, indent option.
Fonts may be changed by clicking on the format, font option, which allows you to select the font size, style, and special effects
(e.g., strikethrough, superscript, bold, italic). The font size, style, and some special effects options are available on the formatting toolbar.
Highlight text that you would like to change font size, style or effect. Choose edit and select the "all" option if you would like to change
the font characteristics for the entire document.
How do I scan a document?
There is a scanner linked to a workstation near the grand staircase on the first floor. Launch the scanning software by clicking on the "scan some documents"
icon on the screen. A scanning wizard will help you through the scanning process. Remember to save your scanned images to your H or I drives (if you are a student)
or to a disc drive. You may also want to "burn" the scanned images on a CD. See for more information. |

When I locate articles online, how do I e-mail them to myself?
Most databases that contain full text articles provide print/email capabilities. Mark the articles that you would like to e-mail and complete
the information (usually your e-mail address and a subject) so that you will recognize the material in your "in-box."
How do I obtain free printouts at the Library?
UWF students are are allocated free printouts per semester (500 for undergraduates and 1,000 for graduate students). Workstations on the first
and second floors are networked to printers on these floors that provide free printouts. Once you swipe your Nautilus Card (or type in your social security
number) through the readers next to the printers on the first and second floors, your materials will print out and the number of printouts will be subtracted
from your allocation. You may add 50 additional pages to your printout allocation by purchasing a Printing Card for $2.50 at the SAIL Lab in Building 79. The
printing card balance, once activated, must be used within a semester. Remember to log out of your account when you have finished printing your materials.
How do I print from the computers on the first floor if I am not a student?
Public printing is available on the library first floor for designated workstations. You must log on to the specified workstation using the library service
account (available at the information desk) and the printers will be available to you. Current cost for each printout is .05 for black print and .20 for color print.
Where are my Network Drives and how do I use them?
UWF faculty, staff, and students are assigned an H: and I: drive with their Argus Account. When logging onto the Library pc's using an Argus account,
a login script will automatically map your H and I drives. The H drive is a private drive that resides for you on the Argus filer and is accessible via any
workstation on campus, including those in the library and computer labs. The I drive is a web accessible drive that will allow you to create and store web pages
for Internet access. For more information concerning your h and I drives, logon to Argus and go to the "My Argonet" tab.
Where can I save retrieved materials or documents I create?
- If you are a UWF faculty, staff, or student you may save the data to your H: or I: drive.
- All patrons may save data to a USB drive (patrons should furnish their own USBs)
- All patrons may e-mail the information to themselves
- Many library pc’s have CDRW devices that allow information to be burned to blank CDs.
If I am printing power point slides from my D2L course, how do I save paper?
In some cases you may not have the following options depending on how the file is presented via the web. Here are a couple of possibilities:
- Right click on the power point file you would like to print and save it to the pc desktop. Once the file(s)has been saved, close the web browser.
Go to the desktop and double click the power point file you saved and this will open the file in the power point program. Choose print and change
the selection to handouts. You may select how many slides you would like to print per page.
- From inside a D2L course, print the outline of the slides by right clicking outline and selecting print.
How do I create a CD?
 |
Launch the CD-writing software by either clicking on the "CD Recording Software" icon on the workstations near the grand staircase on the first floor.
A recording wizard will help you through the necessary steps to follow to make a copy or a data disc. You will need to insert a blank CD into the disc drive
and the wizard will indicate when your CD is created (it usually takes about five minutes per CD). |
Who do I contact to get an ARGUS Account?

When using ARGUS, how do I access my information?
Access via, UWF's secure web portal, by clicking on the ARGUS icon from the UWF homepage (http://uwf.edu) or by typing

library resources, check grades, receive personal announcements, and view campus calendars.
If I am having problems accessing library databases from outside the library building, what do I do?
We provide a number of resources (databases and online journals) that may be accessed only by University of West Florida (UWF) students, faculty and staff.
If you wish to use these resources from off-campus, we must authenticate you as a valid user before connecting you to the service.
Log in using the Accessing from off-campus page on the library website. You will be prompted for a
Nautilus Card number. This is the 14-digit number found under the barcode on the bottom of your Nautilus Card ID.
UWF Distance Learners may instead enter their Library Access Number. If you are still having problems with remote access to the library, contact the
Circulation Department (bmcgowan@uwf.edu or 474-2414) to make sure your library access number or Nautilus Number is active.
May I access the library databases using any browser?
Yes, most current browsers (e.g., Firefox, Mozilla, Internet Explorer, Netscape, Safari) allow you to access the library's databases.
