Papers
Correspondence,
business papers and accounts of Samuel and Nathan Keep, 1826‑1832. Samuel Keep of Boston, Massachusetts, was
awarded the contract for erecting buildings and wharves at the new Pensacola
Navy Yard, 1826. Includes letters
exchanged between Samuel, in Pensacola, and his older brother and probable
investor, Dr. Nathan Keep (1800‑1875), of Boston, Dean of the Harvard
School of Dentistry. In addition to the
letters describing in detail life in Pensacola, at the Navy Yard, and labor and
government problems, the records follow Samuel's lobbying efforts in Congress,
congressional documents of hearings and private bills, and estate records
following his death in 1830.
Subjects include
congressional voting in Pensacola, the departure of Commodore Woolsey from
Pensacola, smallpox and yellow fever epidemics, descriptions of stone wharves
at the Navy Yard, names of ships in the area, Jackson's actions in Pensacola,
people at Pensacola including Hunt and Brackenridge and the Simpson family and
comparing Adams and Jackson as Presidential candidates. Correspondents include Joseph M. White, M.
T. Woolsey, Adam Gordon, William Bainbridge, and Peter Lenox.
