Selected New Books for November 2007

UWF Students studying in New Books Area

Looking for a good book to read? The following titles represent a sampling of some of the UWF Library’s most recent purchases. These titles, and hundreds of others, can be found in the New Book area on the first floor of the UWF Library. Some copies may also be available at the Emerald Coast Library.

The Inheritance of Loss PS 3554 E82 I54 2006 Winner of the 2006 Booker Prize, this novel chronicles the lives of a retired judge living in the Himalayas, his son, his orphaned granddaughter, and his cook as they “struggle with their cultural identity and the forces of modernization while trying to maintain their emotional connection to one another.”

It Takes a Village and Other Lessons Children Teach Us HQ 792 U5 C57 2006 This reprint of the book that Hillary Clinton wrote a decade ago when her husband was president, has an updated introduction and added notes. Her message that we are all in this together is as relevant now as it was and her words, especially in the context of her candidacy for the presidency, may be important to note.

Writing the Trail F 596 L425 2006 This title provides a “literary analysis” of selections from the diaries, journals and letters of five women who journeyed to the American West during the 1800s, and provides a perspective on how the women were changed by their experiences as evidenced in their writings which depict day-to-day existence in the frontier West.

Mozart’s Women ML 410 M9 G645 2007 Mozart turned to women for support, love, and artistic collaboration. This book describes the relationships with his mother, sister, wife and her sisters, and women artists that sustained the brilliant artist during his tumultuous life.

The Madonnas of Leningrad PS 3604 E 149 M33 2007 This story follows the life of Marina, an elderly Russian emigrant battling Alzheimer’s. As she prepares for her granddaughter’s wedding, Marina disappears into the memories of her youth as a docent at the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad.

Life and Death in the Delta E 185.93 M6 R64 2006 From oral histories of 28 African-American individuals living in four Mississippi Delta counties and other sources, the author has woven together a narrative of struggles and triumphs of civil rights activities from 1930 – 1970 and the continuing need to address issues such as poverty and social suffering in this area. A moving tribute to the human spirit.

Horsehide, Pigskin, Oval Tracks and Apple Pie GV 706.5 H666 2006 Subtitled “Essays on sports and American culture,” this collection of essays on baseball, football, golf, NASCAR and other sports focuses on how cultural issues such as diversity and equal rights impact the way professional and college sports does its business. Essay titles include “Holy War on the Football Field: Religion and the Florida State University Indian Mascot Controversy” and “The Masters on Trial: Culture Wars over Women Members at Augusta National Golf Club.

Can We Do That?! HF 5837 S46 2007 CEO Peter Shankman (The Geek Factory, Inc.) “chronicles some of the most ridiculous, outrageous, and possibly crazy PR stunts of all time.” A funny and engaging look at the public relations game. Lots of wacky, but effective, ideas to stir your creative juices.

Andrew Wyeth: Master Drawings from the Artist’s Collection NC 139 W9 A4 2006 Wyeth’s mastery of shading and composition are revealed in this collection of drawings. Information about the technical aspects and the subjects of the drawings are provided by the author.

The Handbook of Leadership Development Evaluation HD 57.7 H3563 2007 With current conversations on the UWF campus about leadership development programs, this book could not be more timely. This collection of essays includes titles such as, “Measuring Return on Investment in Leadership Development;” Evaluating Leadership Development and Organizational Performance;” and “Evaluation for Planning and Improving Leadership Development Programs: a framework based on the Baldrige Education criteria for Performance excellence.”

Engaged Buddhism: The Dalai Lama’s Worldview BQ 7935 B777 P87 2006 The Middle Way of the Buddha, or engaged Buddhism, focuses on how individual improvement and social good are interrelated. Instead of withdrawing from the world, engaged Buddhism stresses world engagement, especially by involvement in activities that result in benefiting others. The Dalai Lama embodies engaged Buddhism by relating to the world he lives while remaining a holy man. This book provides an account of the Dalai Lama’s concepts on engaged Buddhism and includes an interview with him.
